Iranian Lawmaker: Proactive Diplomacy Aims to Disarm Conflict Pretexts
Tehran, Iran – A prominent member of Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission in Parliament has outlined Iran’s strategic approach to current diplomatic engagements, emphasizing that proactive talks serve to neutralize any potential justifications for military conflict. According to Alaeddin Boroujerdi, these discussions are crucial for establishing a clear record with domestic, regional, and international public opinion, particularly following proposals for dialogue.
Strategic Rationale for Engagement
Boroujerdi explained that Iran’s decision to engage in negotiations, even after specific offers for talks were made, stems from a desire to preemptively counter narratives suggesting that a refusal to negotiate could lead to conflict. “We engage in negotiation so that it cannot be said Iran shied away from talks, and that war would not have occurred had Iran negotiated,” he stated. He emphasized that this approach serves as a definitive argument for the public across all levels.
The lawmaker also critiqued the perceived obsolescence of the “carrot and stick” policy, often associated with the United States. He noted that while there may be military pressures aimed at demonstrating power, concerns about the ramifications of any potential attack also drive efforts to resolve issues through diplomacy and negotiation.
Iran’s Non-Negotiable Red Lines
Boroujerdi reaffirmed Iran’s established policies and “red lines” as clear and publicly declared. He asserted that Iran’s nuclear capabilities will be preserved, and its missile program remains non-negotiable. Furthermore, he highlighted that Iran maintains support for its regional allies and partners, while respecting their independence.
Reflecting on past diplomatic efforts, Boroujerdi pointed out that Iran had engaged sincerely in five rounds of negotiations previously, only to face aggression before a sixth round could commence. This experience, he suggested, reinforces the current strategy of using negotiations to complete the argument with public opinion rather than out of blind trust.
Regional Security Warning
The senior parliamentarian stressed Iran’s preparedness for any scenario, warning that any potential miscalculation by adversaries would lead to a significantly different outcome compared to past incidents. He cautioned that such an error would not result in a conflict limited solely to Iran and the initiating party, but would instead engulf the entire region.
In line with previous statements by the Supreme Leader, Boroujerdi affirmed that US bases in the region are identified as potential targets in the event of an attack on Iran. He confirmed that this message has been communicated both to the United States and to regional countries hosting these bases.
Clarion Call to Host Nations
Boroujerdi further clarified Iran’s position to regional states, stating: “We have informed regional countries that we do not intend to infringe upon their soil. However, if the United States attacks Iran, we will undoubtedly target US bases.” He underscored that this places the responsibility on host nations to carefully evaluate the implications of their choices.
In conclusion, Boroujerdi reiterated his belief that any repetition of past mistakes would unequivocally be to the detriment of those who initiate such actions.
