Iraqi PM Affirms Sovereignty: “Our Skies Are Not a Regional Battleground”
Baghdad, Iraq – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has emphatically declared that Iraq will not be drawn into regional conflicts, asserting the government’s sole authority over matters of war and peace. Speaking on Tuesday, the Prime Minister underscored Baghdad’s unwavering commitment to its sovereignty and its proactive role in fostering regional stability.
Upholding National Sovereignty
Prime Minister Sudani’s statements, issued via an official government release, highlighted that “the government, with all its legal institutions, is the sole competent authority to decide on war and peace.” This assertion firmly positions the Iraqi government as the ultimate arbiter of its national security and foreign policy. He affirmed that Iraq stands resolutely against any entity attempting to entangle the nation in regional strife, emphasizing that the paramount priority is safeguarding the supreme interests of the Iraqi people.
Protecting Borders and Airspace
The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s steadfast commitment to protecting Iraq’s territorial integrity, airspace, and waters. He stressed that these vital national assets “will not be allowed to be exploited in any way for regional disputes,” reinforcing Iraq’s determination to prevent its territory from becoming a battleground for external powers. All levels and units of the Iraqi armed forces have been instructed to uphold their legal duties in safeguarding both public and private property, as well as diplomatic missions and foreign embassies.
Championing Regional De-escalation
Leveraging its current presidency of the Arab Summit, Iraq is actively working to coordinate regional positions aimed at establishing stability, halting military operations, and preventing the escalation of violence across both international and regional landscapes. This diplomatic initiative underscores Iraq’s role as a proponent for peace and security in the wider Middle East.
Call for National Unity
Domestically, Prime Minister Sudani urged political forces to unify their discourse and actively counter the spread of rumors. This call for cohesion reflects the government’s effort to maintain internal stability and focus on national priorities amidst regional complexities.
Ensuring Domestic Stability
In a broader address to the nation’s welfare, the Prime Minister confirmed that necessary directives have been issued to ensure food security, maintain public services, and address any exploitation of current conditions leading to price increases. These measures demonstrate a comprehensive approach to governance, aiming to secure the well-being of Iraqi citizens alongside its regional and sovereign commitments.
