Netanyahu Rejects Ceasefire Proposal, Demands Simultaneous Release of All Captives
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally rejected a proposed ceasefire agreement for Gaza put forward by Egyptian and Qatari mediators. The proposal, which had previously received approval from the Hamas movement, was dismissed by the Israeli leader, who is now demanding the immediate and simultaneous release of all remaining captives.
A Firm and Unchanging Policy
A high-ranking political source within the Israeli Prime Minister’s office stated to Hebrew-language media that the country’s position is “firm and unchanging.” The source elaborated that Israel’s official policy is to secure the release of all 50 captives based on principles previously established by the security cabinet for ending the current conflict.
Israeli public broadcaster Kan later confirmed the stance, reporting that Netanyahu’s office insists on the simultaneous release of every individual held captive in Gaza. This condition is presented as a non-negotiable prerequisite for moving forward with any agreement to end hostilities.
Mediators Await a Response
This definitive rejection from Tel Aviv comes after Hamas announced its acceptance of the terms laid out by Qatari and Egyptian intermediaries. Following this announcement, both mediating nations confirmed they were awaiting an official response from the Israeli side to proceed. Netanyahu’s latest declaration now places the onus back on the mediators and Hamas, significantly complicating the path to a negotiated pause in the conflict.
Analysts observing the situation suggest that by rejecting deals at critical junctures, the Israeli Prime Minister’s strategy may be aimed at ensuring his political survival by prolonging the military campaign.
