New Tehran Traffic and Pollution Control Schemes: Updated Timings, Fines, and Resident Benefits
In a move to manage urban congestion and air quality, the Tehran City Council has officially announced the operational details for the city’s traffic and pollution control plans for the current year. The regulations outline specific timings, exemptions, and a streamlined digital process for compliance.
Traffic Scheme Hours and Exemptions
The main traffic restriction plan will be in effect from Saturday to Wednesday, excluding official holidays, between the hours of 6:30 AM and 6:00 PM. Vehicle entry into the designated traffic zone during this period requires a permit. Outside of this time frame, movement within the zone is unrestricted for all vehicles, though authorities have noted that hours may be subject to change on specific days.
A key feature of the weekly schedule is the suspension of the main traffic plan on Thursdays. However, the air pollution reduction scheme, commonly known as the “odd-even” plan based on license plate numbers, will be active from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM. On Fridays and official holidays, residents and visitors enjoy a complete reprieve, as neither the traffic plan nor the odd-even pollution scheme are enforced.
Special Privileges for Zone Residents
Recognizing the needs of those living within the restricted zone, the municipality offers significant benefits through the “My Tehran” online portal (my.tehran.ir). Registered residents are eligible for a 50% discount on traffic scheme fees for necessary travel during restricted hours (6:00 PM to 6:30 AM). The benefits package also includes one free exit from the zone before 9:00 AM and one free entry after 4:00 PM.
How to Register and Pay
Compliance is managed digitally. Vehicle owners must register and create an account on the “My Tehran” portal, charge their user account, and then select the specific days they require access to the restricted zones. The final cost is calculated based on the duration of travel, vehicle type, and the car’s technical inspection status. The criteria for resident discounts remain consistent with the previous year. Furthermore, tenants can also avail themselves of these resident privileges by presenting their rental agreement at municipal electronic service offices.
