Parliament Urges Swift Action on Full Teacher Pay Increase
In a firm address, Alireza Monadi Sefidani, Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s Education, Research, and Technology Commission, issued a clear directive to the government regarding the delayed implementation of a mandated salary increase for educators.
While acknowledging the Ministry of Education’s efforts on the matter, Monadi highlighted that the necessary cooperation from the Plan and Budget Organization has not yet been forthcoming. He assured that Parliament stands firmly alongside the Minister of Education in seriously pursuing this legal right for teachers.
A Pending Mandate
Monadi clarified that a resolution approving a 50% special allowance for teachers has not been fully executed. To date, only 21% of the increase has been paid, despite other government bodies having received their full allocated benefits. The Chairman stated that this discrepancy is unjustifiable and that Parliament is adamant about seeing the issue resolved promptly.
Beyond Recent Reforms
The official also noted that while the implementation of the Teacher Ranking Law has already raised educators’ base salaries by approximately 3 to 5 million tomans and resulted in the payment of five months of arrears, a significant gap remains. He emphasized that teachers’ current salaries still do not align with the real cost of living.
Monadi asserted that the Plan and Budget Organization’s reference to the recent raises from the ranking system cannot be used as a reason to withhold the full special allowance. His commission, he confirmed, is dedicated to ensuring its complete fulfillment.
A Call for Immediate Resolution
Concluding his remarks, Monadi Sefidani stressed that the government must take immediate action to transform promises into reality and ensure that teacher compensation is brought in line with living standards.
