Iran National Team Goalkeeper Reflects on Past Error Ahead of Crucial Final
In a press conference ahead of the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup final against Uzbekistan, Iran’s national football team goalkeeper, Payam Niazmand, addressed the media with a blend of team analysis and personal accountability.
Acknowledging a Competitive Rivalry
Niazmand began by emphasizing the mutual familiarity between the two finalists. “I think both teams have sufficient knowledge of each other; we have played against each other several times in recent years,” he stated. He highlighted the cross-pollination of players between the leagues, noting, “Many Uzbek players have come to Iran; one of them is my teammate (Uston Urunov).” The Persepolis FC star acknowledged Uzbekistan’s significant progress, adding, “Uzbekistan has invested heavily in football and has shown remarkable improvement. Past matches between our teams have been close and engaging, and I hope we can emerge victorious tomorrow with a strong performance.”
A Moment of Personal Reflection
The conference took a introspective turn when Niazmand was asked about the team’s previous match. The goalkeeper took direct responsibility for an error that led to an early goal against Tajikistan. “I made a mistake on the scene of the first goal,” he confessed. “In recent years, even during my two seasons under Mr. Ghalehnoyi, it has been rare for me to make such a mistake. Nevertheless, I must have higher concentration and better preparedness.”
While suggesting the officiating may have also been a factor, Niazmand was clear that the primary responsibility was his own. “Ultimately, I should not have made that error because we conceded the first goal and the team lost its concentration. I must work harder to ensure this does not happen again.”
His candid remarks underscore a professional commitment to improvement as the team prepares for the high-stakes final, aiming to bring the trophy home to Iran.
