President Pezeshkian Outlines Sweeping Economic Reforms, Calls for National Unity Against Destabilization
In a direct address to the nation, President Masoud Pezeshkian unveiled the details of his administration’s major economic plan aimed at overhauling the subsidy system. Speaking on national television, the President articulated the rationale behind the reforms, emphasizing the government’s commitment to justice, eradicating corruption, and improving the livelihoods of all citizens amidst ongoing economic challenges and recent public demonstrations.
A New Era of Economic Justice
President Pezeshkian detailed the government’s decision to shift the allocation of preferential currency, previously provided at the beginning of the supply chain to importers and producers, directly to consumers. He asserted that the former system created fertile ground for widespread corruption, rent-seeking, smuggling, over-invoicing, and under-invoicing, primarily benefiting the wealthy at the expense of ordinary citizens.
“Justice is a core principle of our belief system, and we have made promises to our people in this regard,” President Pezeshkian stated. He highlighted that the multi-tiered exchange rate system fostered significant moral hazards and financial irregularities. The new approach, he explained, ensures that the currency allocated by the government directly reaches the people, irrespective of ethnicity, gender, or belief. He also reassured the public that the financial support provided would be dynamic, adjusting in line with any potential currency depreciation, unlike previous fixed subsidy models.
Government Responsiveness and Support
Acknowledging legitimate public protests regarding rising prices and economic decisions, President Pezeshkian affirmed the government’s obligation to listen to citizens’ concerns. He revealed that he personally met with representatives of guilds and market traders to address their anxieties. To mitigate the potential impact on producers and businesses, a special task force has been established under the direct supervision of the President, headed by the Governor of the Central Bank and comprising key ministers. This task force is charged with daily monitoring and implementation of the reform.
Key support measures announced include the allocation of 700 trillion Tomans for liquidity support to industrial, agricultural, and small-scale producers, along with an additional 70 trillion Tomans to enhance the capital of agricultural and industrial banks, specifically for livestock and poultry feed. The President stressed that this collaborative approach extends to provincial and local levels, ensuring that all concerns are addressed promptly.
Distinguishing Protest from Destabilization
While recognizing the right of citizens to protest, President Pezeshkian drew a sharp distinction between legitimate grievances and acts of “riots” and “chaos.” He strongly condemned destructive actions such as attacks on public property, burning of mosques, and desecration of religious texts, attributing these incidents to a “plot and conspiracy” orchestrated by external adversaries, specifically mentioning the United States and the Zionist regime.
“These are not our people,” the President declared, referring to those engaged in violence. He claimed that “trained terrorists” were brought into the country to incite unrest, kill innocent people, and create division. He urged the public to remain vigilant against such enemy plots, which he suggested aim to destabilize the nation under the guise of economic issues.
Strengthening National Resilience and Future Vision
President Pezeshkian also addressed critical issues in the energy sector, assuring that imbalances in electricity and gas supply, which previously affected industrial and production sectors, are being resolved. He noted significant achievements in solar power installation and energy efficiency, promising an end to energy cuts for industries in the coming year.
Looking ahead, the President pledged that his administration is fully committed to eradicating corruption, rent-seeking, and injustice, which he views as the root causes of the nation’s economic challenges. He expressed confidence that, with public cooperation, Iran will overcome the “full-scale economic war” imposed upon it and build a future founded on justice and prosperity.
Call for National Solidarity
Concluding his address, President Pezeshkian called for unwavering national unity and solidarity. He appealed to influential figures—artists, scientists, and athletes—to contribute to calming the situation and fostering cooperation rather than fueling discord. He reiterated his personal commitment to public service, stating that his sole motivation is to serve the people and eliminate injustices.
He urged families to prevent their youth from being drawn into the destructive activities of “terrorists and rioters” and called on citizens to stand firmly against those who seek to harm public property and disrupt national security. President Pezeshkian expressed certainty that, with the collective effort of the people, producers, and market traders, Iran will successfully navigate current challenges and secure a bright future for its children.
