Sapinto’s Tactical Overhaul Revives Esteghlal’s Fortunes
A Season Resurrected
Esteghlal FC has dramatically reversed its fortunes, securing a vital 2-0 victory against Jordan’s Al-Wehdat in the third week of the AFC Champions League group stage. This crucial win, the team’s first Asian triumph of the season, has reignited their campaign and kept hopes of advancing to the next round alive. Under the guidance of head coach Ricardo Sápinto, the team has emerged from a significant slump with two consecutive victories, signaling a potential end to a seven-match winless streak that had featured three losses and four draws. Sápinto’s strategic adjustments are being credited for this remarkable turnaround.
A Goalkeeping Conundrum Solved
One of the most pivotal changes came in the goalkeeping position. Following the departure of long-time keeper Seyed Hossein Hosseini, the summer signing of Spanish goalkeeper Antonio Adán was initially met with unwavering support from Sápinto. However, after a heavy defeat against Al-Wasl, the opportunity was given to Habib Far Abbasi. Far Abbasi’s confident and reliable performances in recent matches have earned him the number one spot, with his statistics—conceding only 4 goals in 5 games compared to Adán’s 14 in 6—making a compelling case for his continued selection.
Defensive Revolution
Sápinto has orchestrated a complete overhaul of the defensive line. The initial back four of Ramin Rezaeian, Aref Aghasi, Armin Sohrabian, and Abolfazl Jalali has been entirely dismantled. The return from injury of Rustam Ashurmatov has provided a commanding presence, solidifying the defense. Aghasi, after a critical error, has been replaced by Fallah, while Sohrabian has also lost his place. On the left flank, the consistent performances of Hossein Goudarzi have seen him displace the previously fluctuating Abolfazl Jalali. The most significant decision, however, has been the benching of star player Ramin Rezaeian, who has not featured in the last three matches, with Saleh Hardani taking his role.
A Formidable Foreign Duo
The most exciting development for Esteghlal has been the burgeoning partnership between foreign stars Yasir Alsani and Mounir El Haddadi. The two have developed a formidable understanding, creating a dynamic and dangerous attacking axis. This season, Alsani has contributed 4 goals and an assist, while El Haddadi has scored twice and provided two assists—both for Alsani. Their synergy, combined with the creativity of Mehran Ahmad and Alireza Kooshki, has transformed Esteghlal’s attack into a potent force.
Youth Takes Center Stage
Sápinto has also placed significant trust in the team’s young talents. Strikers Saeed Sahrkhizan and Amirmohammad Rezazadegan have been integrated into the starting lineup, with their energetic playing styles perfectly suited to the coach’s high-pressing philosophy. Sahrkhizan, in particular, has displaced the more experienced Dienkenson Nazon. Furthermore, 18-year-old winger Esmail Gholizadeh has been given opportunities to showcase his ability and is expected to feature more prominently in the coming weeks.
Through these calculated and bold changes, Ricardo Sápinto has successfully steered Esteghlal away from crisis, building a more cohesive and competitive squad that now looks toward the future with renewed optimism.
