Somalia’s Foreign Minister Firmly Rejects Palestinian Resettlement and Israeli Military Bases
Somalia’s Firm Rejection
The Federal Government of Somalia has unequivocally rejected any process of forced displacement or resettlement of Palestinians within its national borders, including its northern territories. Mogadishu’s decisive declaration emphasizes that the relocation of Palestinians to the self-declared region of Somaliland is unacceptable and will not be permitted. This firm stance also extends to the potential construction of any Israeli military base on Somali soil.
Minister Details Unwavering Stance
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Abdul Salam Aidieh Ali, Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, articulated his nation’s resolute position regarding both potential Palestinian displacement and alleged Israeli plans in the region. Minister Ali stated, “Bringing Palestinians to the separatist region of Somaliland is unacceptable and will not happen.” He further asserted Somalia’s opposition to any Israeli military presence, declaring that “any path moving in the opposite direction of this position will not be welcomed.”
Upholding Sovereignty and Unity
Minister Ali underscored that Somalia’s paramount objective is to preserve its national stability and unity. He affirmed that the forced displacement of Palestinians to Somalia, or the establishment of foreign military bases, are not matters that would be accepted by the federal government. “Somalia’s goal is to maintain the country’s stability and unity and move in the right direction,” he emphasized, reinforcing the government’s commitment to these foundational principles.
A Unified Government Position
The Foreign Minister highlighted the complete alignment between his stated position and that of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, confirming that the government will not allow the transfer of Palestinian refugees to northern Somalia. While expressing hope that the information received about Palestinian settlement plans and an Israeli military base might ultimately prove incorrect, Minister Ali confirmed that these reports are what the Somali government has been made aware of. Mogadishu’s clear and unambiguous message, reflecting its national sovereignty and strategic interests, has been conveyed globally.
