Spain Rejects Unilateral Global Rule-Setting by US and Israel

Spain’s Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has firmly stated that neither the United States nor Israel possess the authority to unilaterally dictate global rules and standards. This declaration comes amid ongoing international tensions and highlights Spain’s commitment to established international legal frameworks.

Robles emphasized that Madrid’s stance regarding military actions impacting Iran is not indicative of a rift in transatlantic relations. Instead, she reiterated that Spain’s security and defense policies are fundamentally grounded in a “firm and explicit commitment to global peace and adherence to the international legal order.”
Speaking in an interview, the Defense Minister asserted, “The United States and Israel cannot be the sole arbiters determining peace or the laws governing our world.” This statement underscores Spain’s belief in a multilateral approach to international affairs, where decisions are made through consensus and respect for sovereign nations.
Context of Regional Military Operations
The comments emerge in the context of recent military operations in the region. Reports indicate extensive strikes against military and civilian areas in Iran, which have resulted in casualties. In response, Iran’s armed forces launched Operation “True Promise 4” targeting Israeli positions and U.S. military centers in West Asia, reportedly inflicting significant damage.
