Spain’s PM: Military Confrontation with Iran a “Profound Mistake,” Urges US Partnership
Madrid, Spain – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has once again firmly declared that any aggressive military action against Iran would be a “profound mistake.” His remarks come amid calls for a shift towards “loyal cooperation” rather than “confrontation” in the relationship between Spain and the United States, particularly following recent tensions over the potential use of Spanish military bases.
A Stance Against Conflict
Speaking at a joint press conference with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, Prime Minister Sánchez reiterated his consistent position. He emphasized that what he described as a potential “aggressive war by Israel and America against Iran” would constitute a “profound mistake.” This statement underscores Spain’s diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and promote peaceful resolutions.
Prioritizing “Loyal Cooperation” with the US
Sánchez advocated for a recalibration of relations with the United States, stressing that “loyal cooperation” must take precedence over “confrontation.” He articulated a vision for a bilateral relationship founded on “respect, a spirit of loyal cooperation, and equality.” This call for a more balanced partnership follows reports of strain over Spain’s reservations regarding Washington’s potential use of its military installations on Spanish soil for operations targeting Iran.
The Spanish leader’s comments reflect Madrid’s commitment to its foreign policy principles, seeking to navigate international dynamics through diplomacy and partnership, rather than through military escalation.
