Tehran Intensifies Anti-Smuggling Efforts: Billions in Contraband Seized, Economic Integrity Bolstered
Tehran, Iran – In a significant move to fortify national economic security, Tehran’s Economic Security Police have successfully dismantled two major contraband operations, seizing illicit goods valued at a combined 85 billion Rials. Brigadier General Mahdi Afshari, Head of Tehran’s Economic Security Police, detailed the operations, underscoring the Islamic Republic’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal trade and safeguarding domestic industries.
Massive Clothing Cache Uncovered in Tehran Bazaar
The first major operation targeted a substantial warehouse nestled within Tehran’s bustling Molavi Street market. Following meticulous technical and police investigations, officers uncovered an illicit cache of over 36,000 pieces of foreign-made clothing, including socks, trousers, and women’s shirts. The estimated value of these seized garments alone stands at 60 billion Rials.
Investigations revealed a sophisticated smuggling network: the goods were initially transported from southern border cities to the outskirts of Tehran using specialized fast-delivery (“shoti”) vehicles, before being transferred by vans for storage and distribution in the Molavi Street warehouse. Upon inspection, it was determined that the merchandise lacked valid customs documentation, with any existing paperwork being outdated and irrelevant to the seized items. A judicial case has been initiated, and a suspect has been referred to judicial authorities for further proceedings.
Sports Equipment Smuggling Ring Intercepted
In a separate but equally crucial operation in Shurabad, south Tehran, economic security police successfully intercepted another smuggling ring dealing in sports equipment. Over 1,140 items of various sports goods, valued at an estimated 25 billion Rials, were discovered in a warehouse. This consignment, intended for the Tehran Bazaar, also lacked proper customs documents and import permits, confirming its illegal entry into the country. One individual has been arrested in connection with this seizure, and legal actions are underway.
Upholding Economic Sovereignty and Protecting Industries
Brigadier General Afshari emphasized the critical importance of these operations in protecting Iran’s economic interests and supporting local production. He issued a stern warning against those who engage in the illegal import and export of goods and currency, stating that such activities directly undermine and destroy the nation’s domestic industries.
“Do not target the destruction of the country’s industries by investing in the illegal entry and exit of goods and currency,” Afshari urged. He reiterated the police’s resolve to actively pursue and prosecute individuals involved in illicit trade, which poses a significant threat to national economic stability and self-reliance. The Economic Security Police chief also called upon the public to play an active role in this national effort, urging citizens to report any instances of smuggling or hoarding of goods to designated police contact numbers. These successful operations highlight the continuous vigilance and effectiveness of Iran’s law enforcement agencies in upholding economic sovereignty and fostering a secure commercial environment.
