Tehran Implements Comprehensive Odd-Even Traffic Scheme to Combat Air Pollution
In a decisive move to address a critical spike in air pollution, Tehran will enact a stringent, city-wide odd-even traffic restriction scheme. The emergency measure, activated by the capital’s Air Pollution Emergency Task Force, will be in effect from 6:30 AM to 8:30 PM, applying to all vehicles based on their license plate numbers.
A City-Wide Measure for Cleaner Air
Unlike the regular, more localized traffic schemes, this comprehensive version will be enforced “from the doorstep,” meaning the restrictions apply across the entire metropolis of Tehran, not just the central zones. This expansive application is designed to significantly reduce non-essential travel and vehicle volume, directly targeting the primary source of urban pollutants during peak morning and evening hours.
Strict Enforcement and Additional Restrictions
Law enforcement authorities have announced a multi-pronged approach to ensure the scheme’s effectiveness:
- Zero Tolerance for Violations: A heightened presence of traffic police and surveillance cameras will be deployed to identify and fine vehicles that violate the odd-even rule.
- Heavy Vehicle Ban: A complete ban on the circulation of trucks and heavy vehicles within the city has been imposed. Exemptions are made only for vehicles transporting essential supplies such as fuel, medicine, and food to maintain critical supply chains.
- Cracking Down on Polluters: Special attention will be given to identifying and penalizing smoky vehicles and those without a valid emissions inspection certificate. Authorities have warned that the technical inspection permits for highly polluting vehicles may be revoked.
- Suspension of Daily Permits: To further reduce traffic volume in the central city, the municipality has temporarily halted the issuance of daily traffic zone permits. Only vehicles with annual or weekly permits will be granted access.
A Coordinated Public Policy Effort
This integrated strategy reflects a coordinated effort between urban management and law enforcement to bring air quality indicators under control. By restricting private vehicles, removing heavy polluters from the roads, and promoting a shift towards public transportation, the initiative aims to provide immediate relief during this period of critically poor air quality. Clear and timely public announcements have been made to help citizens plan their travel for the day accordingly and avoid violations.
