Venezuela Rises: Thousands Demand Maduro’s Release Following Reported U.S. Military Action
Caracas, Venezuela – Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets of Caracas on Tuesday, demanding the immediate release of President Nicolas Maduro, who was reportedly detained last month following an aggressive attack by U.S. military forces. The demonstration, predominantly comprising public sector employees, underscored a nation grappling with political uncertainty and external pressures.
Caracas Mobilizes for its President
Reporters from Agence France-Presse (AFP) witnessed the massive rally, as participants marched through the capital’s thoroughfares, chanting slogans such as “Venezuela needs Nicolas.” Many protesters carried images of President Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who was also reportedly arrested alongside him. The government-organized demonstration saw participants adorned in red attire and waving Venezuelan flags, converging in the city’s downtown core to voice their solidarity.
A Nation’s Anguish and Hope
Amidst the throngs, 58-year-old municipal employee Jose Perdomo shared his sentiments with AFP. “We feel confusion, sadness, and anger,” Perdomo stated, adding, “Maduro’s arrest has driven us to the streets. After the anger, disappointment, and uncertainty, what remains is hope – a hope that takes shape in the streets and in the struggle. Sooner or later, they will be forced to release our President.” Perdomo also expressed his full support for the decisions made by interim President Delsy Rodriguez.
Interim Government’s Shifting Landscape
In a parallel development, interim President Delsy Rodriguez has reportedly committed to significant reforms under pressure from the United States. Her agenda includes issuing a general amnesty, ordering the closure of the notorious Helicoide prison, and initiating comprehensive judicial reforms. Furthermore, Rodriguez has overseen the release of hundreds of political prisoners and advanced legislation to reform fuel laws, aiming to pave the way for private sector participation in Venezuela’s vital oil industry.
