Clergy Must Speak Globally, Address Modern Challenges to Preserve Revolution, Says Ayatollah Javadi Amoli
Qom, Iran – A prominent Iranian religious authority, Grand Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli, has issued a powerful call for the nation’s clergy to expand their global engagement, deeply understand contemporary challenges, and actively address the doubts prevalent in the modern age. Speaking on the enduring legacy of Imam Khomeini’s “Charter of the Clergy,” Ayatollah Javadi Amoli emphasized that the effectiveness and influence of religious scholars hinge on their ability to resonate with global audiences and uphold the principles of the Islamic Revolution.
Understanding the Evolving Landscape
Ayatollah Javadi Amoli underscored the necessity for religious scholars to grasp the current socio-political and intellectual climate. “If the clergy is to act according to Imam Khomeini’s charter, they must understand the era in which they live and what its problems and doubts are,” he stated. He urged students and seasoned scholars alike to frequently revisit Imam Khomeini’s will and charter, which explicitly called upon them to recognize and adapt to their times. He argued that truly impactful communication requires a “global and humane” approach, addressing current concerns rather than outdated narratives.
Imam Khomeini’s Vision for Clerical Engagement
Drawing directly from Imam Khomeini’s teachings, Ayatollah Javadi Amoli highlighted three core directives for the clergy:
- Insight into the Age: Cultivating a deep awareness of contemporary global issues and societal shifts.
- Proactive Action: Translating understanding into relevant and effective guidance.
- Promoting Unity: Fostering cohesion through acceptance and dialogue.
These principles, he noted, are foundational for scholars to fulfill their role as “heirs of the prophets” and engage effectively with people worldwide.
Addressing Ideological Threats and Doubts
The Grand Ayatollah warned against the pervasive nature of doubts, likening them to a “virus” that can undermine societal stability. He stressed that ideological battles often precede physical conflicts, citing historical examples where ideas – like those of Marx and Engels – paved the way for later movements. To safeguard society, he asserted, the clergy must proactively confront and resolve contemporary intellectual ambiguities, preventing them from destabilizing the collective consciousness. “Humanity lives by thought and reflection,” he explained, “and once an idea takes hold, it is not easily controlled.”
Preserving the Revolution and Societal Integrity
Ayatollah Javadi Amoli reiterated that effective spiritual guidance and warning require deep personal conviction, which in turn facilitates societal reform. He recalled divine guidance to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) regarding the education and warning of society, applying it directly to today’s religious scholars. He concluded by outlining five critical duties for the clergy, as emphasized by Imam Khomeini:
- Comprehensive Religious Expertise: Being complete masters of religious knowledge.
- Unyielding Faith: Possessing deep belief and conviction.
- Maintaining Unity: Preserving harmony and solidarity within their ranks and society.
- Contemporary Awareness: Staying informed about current events and global trends.
- Safeguarding the Revolution: Preserving the Islamic Revolution until the advent of its true and original owner.
This urgent call from Ayatollah Javadi Amoli underscores the crucial political and societal role of the clergy in Iran, emphasizing their responsibility to adapt, engage, and lead in a rapidly changing world while remaining steadfast in the principles of the Islamic Revolution.
