Trump Signals Imminent Direct Talks with Tehran, Sidelines Lebanon Escalation
Washington D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that direct negotiations with Iran are on the horizon, suggesting that a recent ceasefire agreement between the two nations has paved the way for imminent discussions. Speaking to the New York Post, Trump stated that the talks are expected to follow the recent U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement, which he revealed was brokered in Pakistan.
Key Personnel and Security Concerns
While specific details remain fluid, Trump alluded to the potential involvement of key members of his administration in these crucial discussions. Special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are considered likely participants. However, the presence of Deputy President J.D. Vance is uncertain, with Trump citing “safety and security concerns” as a potential impediment to his attendance.
“Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, maybe J.D., I’m not sure if they will be present. Safety and security is an issue,” Trump commented.
“Very Soon” Negotiations Predicted
The President reiterated his assertion that face-to-face negotiations would commence “soon, in fact, very soon.” This anticipation follows recent statements from Deputy President J.D. Vance, who, speaking from Hungary, conveyed President Trump’s directive to the negotiation team to “go and work in good faith to reach an agreement.”
Lebanon Conflict Excluded from Ceasefire Deal
In a separate development, President Trump clarified that the recent cessation of hostilities between Washington and Tehran does not encompass the ongoing escalation in Lebanon. Speaking with PBS, Trump characterized Israel’s intense aerial strikes in Lebanon as a “separate conflict” with Hezbollah, distinct from the U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement.
When questioned about the exclusion of Lebanon from the ceasefire plan, Trump attributed it to Hezbollah’s non-involvement in the broader agreement. “Because of Hezbollah. They weren’t in the deal. That will be addressed as well. No problem,” he stated.
