“When influential individuals or public figures respond to public criticism with indifference or harshness, they may be overlooking the depth of societal discontent,” Qaraei Moghaddam explained. “Such behaviors can widen the gap between the people and the governance structure and fuel public mistrust.”
He added that the educated segment of the middle class, being more aware of the situation, often plays an enlightening role, which can sometimes inadvertently increase this perceived distance.
The Role of Materialism in Modern Identity
The discussion also turned to the influence of materialism on social values. Qaraei Moghaddam suggested that in the modern era, a materialistic mindset has become prevalent, where a person’s value is often judged by appearances and possessions rather than character.
“In such an environment,” he said, “an individual, striving to be recognized and to establish their identity, may attempt to demonstrate their status through material displays.” He described this not as a sign of popularity, but as an effort to be seen and validated in a large, impersonal society.
