Title: Awaiting the Return: Esteghlal and Persepolis’ Path Back to Azadi Stadium
Tehran Football Chief Addresses Stadium Logistics for Top Clubs
In a recent address, Mirshad Majedi, the Head of the Tehran Football Association, provided a significant update on the ongoing situation regarding the home stadiums for Iran’s premier football clubs, Esteghlal and Persepolis.
Speaking at an event to unveil new referee kits, Majedi first highlighted the positive and dynamic efforts being made across various football districts, praising the work of his colleagues in areas such as talent identification, refereeing, and infrastructure development.
Clarifying the Stadium Situation
The core of Majedi’s comments focused on the pressing issue of stadium availability. He clarified that the current arrangement for Esteghlal and Persepolis to play their home matches in Shahreghdas or Takhti Stadium is a necessary interim solution.
“According to AFC and FIFA regulations,” Majedi explained, “teams must have their own dedicated grounds to host home matches. It is well-known that in our country, this is not fully feasible, and clubs have historically relied on Azadi Stadium, which is under the management of the Development and Renovation Organization.”
He emphasized that the national football federation has stated it is the responsibility of the clubs themselves to declare their preferred venues. The current shortage of suitable football stadiums has led to the temporary relocation of matches until Azadi Stadium is fully prepared for their return.
Azadi Stadium Timeline and Preparations
Regarding the timeline for the iconic Azadi Stadium’s readiness, Majedi offered a realistic assessment. “Based on my understanding,” he stated, “Azadi Stadium will not be ready for at least another half-season.”
He confirmed that Dr. Javadi is working tirelessly to prepare Takhti Stadium as an alternative venue in the meantime. While noting that Takhti is reportedly operational, Majedi added that the two major clubs have expressed a preference not to play there, underscoring their desire to return to their traditional home at Azadi as soon as renovations are complete.
The situation continues to be managed with the goal of ensuring the clubs can compete while adhering to international standards and awaiting the completion of essential infrastructure work.
