White House Scrambles to Quell Mideast Outcry After Ambassador’s Provocative ‘Greater Israel’ Remarks
The White House has launched a swift diplomatic offensive following highly controversial remarks attributed to the U.S. Ambassador to Israel in a recent media interview. The ambassador, identified in reports as Mike Huckabee, allegedly stated that “it’s okay for Israel to take control of all territories in the Middle East,” grounding his views in Old Testament texts. This statement immediately sparked anger among Arab leaders, prompting urgent clarification from Washington.
Diplomatic Firestorm Erupts
According to a report by the American newspaper Politico, senior U.S. administration officials quickly moved to contain the diplomatic fallout. High-ranking figures, including the Deputy Secretary of State and Assistant Secretary of State for Political Affairs, engaged in outreach to Arab nations. They conveyed a clear message: the ambassador’s comments represent his personal views and do not signify any change in U.S. government policy. Multiple informed sources further corroborated that these statements do not reflect any alteration in Washington’s official approach to the region.
Regional Sovereignty and Integration Concerns
The controversial remarks have raised significant alarm among Arab states, threatening delicate diplomatic efforts. A senior diplomat from a Gulf Cooperation Council country asserted that such statements could undermine a core U.S. objective: the integration of Israel into the broader regional framework. “The sovereignty of Arab nations is not a matter to be overlooked,” the diplomat emphasized, “especially at a time when we are striving to forge a united Middle East that includes Israel.”
Internally, an official from the U.S. State Department acknowledged divergent views within the administration, stating, “Huckabee does not represent our official position, nor does he offer the best version of support for Israel.”
Widespread Condemnation and Ambassador’s Defense
The ambassador’s comments have drawn widespread condemnation across Arab and Islamic countries, with leaders labeling them “dangerous and provocative.” Critics argue that the remarks contradict stated U.S. government plans and objectives concerning the Gaza Strip.
In response to the backlash, the U.S. Embassy in Israel stated that the ambassador’s words had been taken out of context. The ambassador himself also criticized media reporting, claiming that “other details and the original context” of his statements regarding Israel’s potential control over the Middle East were omitted from news coverage.
