Title: Yasuj Physician’s Killer Executed in Public as Judiciary Upholds “Societal Security”
Lead: The public execution of a man convicted of murdering a cardiologist in Yasuj was carried out on Tuesday, with senior judicial officials stating the punishment serves as a stark warning to those who threaten public safety.
A Concluded Judicial Process
The sentence was carried out this Tuesday morning in Yasuj, the capital of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad Province, following the final confirmation of the verdict by Iran’s Supreme Court. Seyed Vahid Mousavian, the provincial prosecutor, detailed that the case underwent a comprehensive review, including a psychological evaluation that confirmed the perpetrator’s mental soundness at the time of the crime. The execution proceeded after the victim’s family requested the enforcement of the “qisas” (retribution-in-kind) sentence and following requisite authorization from the head of the Judiciary.
A Message of Deterrence
Prosecutor Mousavian emphasized that the execution delivers a clear message. “The implementation of this verdict is a message for those who intend to violate the security of society and its citizens,” he stated. He further highlighted that the perpetrator had publicly boasted of his crime on social media following the brutal act, even issuing threats against others. “However,” Mousavian added, “he was ultimately caught in the clutches of justice and faced the consequences of his actions.”
Judiciary’s “Red Line” on Security
In a final warning, the prosecutor underscored the judiciary’s unwavering stance on maintaining public order. “The security of society and the people is a red line for the judicial system,” he asserted. “Any individual or group that seeks to disrupt this security will be confronted; the provincial judiciary will use all its capacity to protect the lives, property, and security of citizens.”
Background of the Case
The execution brings closure to the case of Dr. Mohsen Davoudi, a specialist in heart and vascular diseases, who was fatally shot on his way home in Yasuj in November of the previous Persian calendar year (2023). The public carrying out of the sentence occurred just prior to the first anniversary of the physician’s murder.
