Israeli Minister Articulates Vision of Expanded Territorial Control
West Bank Settlement Inauguration Fuels Border Expansion Rhetoric
During the inauguration of a new settlement, “Maoz Tzur,” in the West Bank, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich outlined a vision for extending the perceived borders of territories controlled by the Israeli government. Smotrich declared that Israel is on a path to expanding its frontiers in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria.
Beyond Military Gains: A Political Dimension
The Finance Minister emphasized that this initiative extends beyond mere military achievements, asserting the existence of a parallel political strategy aimed at solidifying these perceived gains on the ground. His remarks come amidst internal Israeli discourse questioning the government’s overemphasis on military aspects without sufficient translation into political outcomes.
Envisioning Expanded Fronts: Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria
Smotrich detailed specific areas for this territorial expansion. He indicated an extension into the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, he spoke of a projected expansion into Lebanon, reaching the Litani River, which he described as a move towards establishing “defensible borders.” A third projected extension was mentioned concerning Syria, extending to the peak of Mount Hermon and at least to a buffer zone.
