Iran Assures Essential Goods Flow Amidst Geopolitical Tensions
Tehran, Iran – Iran is steadfast in ensuring the unimpeded flow of essential goods, even as geopolitical maneuvers in vital waterways create ripple effects across global energy markets. A senior Iranian lawmaker has underscored the nation’s resilience and preparedness to counter any attempts to disrupt trade routes, asserting that alternative supply chains are robust and well-established.
Strategic Waterways and National Sovereignty
Habib Qasemi, a member of the Presiding Board of the Article 90 Commission of the Iranian Parliament, highlighted the crucial geostrategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz. He reiterated Iran’s inherent right, based on its geographical position, to exert regulatory, guiding, and managerial oversight in these territorial waters. “Just as Iran exercises sovereignty over its airspace and land, its territorial waters require safeguarding and control, forming an integral part of the national environment,” Qasemi stated.
Navigating International Waters and Joint Jurisdictions
Referencing international conventions of 1958 and 1982, Qasemi clarified the distinction between international waters and shared maritime zones. He emphasized that in joint areas, such as those shared with Oman, decision-making authority rests solely with the two neighboring nations. While joint decisions are preferred, he added that Iran retains the full right to independently manage its territorial waters should cooperation be disrupted.
Responding to Provocations and Ensuring Security
Qasemi addressed recent developments, noting that Iran had implemented increased controls and restrictions on the transit of vessels deemed potentially harmful. This measure, he explained, was a natural response to actions that had crossed ethical, humanitarian, and environmental boundaries, aimed at preventing security, environmental, and human damage. He acknowledged the global significance of these waterways, noting that a substantial portion of the world’s natural gas and oil passes through them.
Parliamentary Action on Strait of Hormuz Governance
Following recent events, the Iranian Parliament has initiated discussions and is actively reviewing proposals to establish a comprehensive legal framework governing the Strait of Hormuz. Several draft plans have been developed and are currently being consolidated by the presiding board and relevant commissions to create a unified, overarching proposal.
Countering Maritime Blockade Attempts
Qasemi strongly criticized what he described as an attempt by the United States to impose a maritime blockade, characterizing it as an act of arrogance and aggression. He pointed to recent actions by the U.S. as revealing the weakness and lack of credibility of international bodies like the United Nations and the Security Council, which he argued are currently operating under American influence.
Iran’s Inherent Strengths and Global Energy Demands
He dismissed comparisons drawn by the U.S. between Iran and other nations, stating that such assumptions overlook Iran’s fundamental advantages in geography, natural resources, human capital, and strategic depth. Qasemi also highlighted Iran’s extensive access to the sea from both north and south, its borders with numerous countries, and its well-developed rail, road, and port infrastructure, which collectively ensure the continuity of trade. He suggested that these conditions could even steer imports towards essential and vital goods, benefiting the nation.
The lawmaker underscored the global reliance on energy from the Persian Gulf and asserted that nations dependent on this energy must themselves ensure the security of their trade routes. He concluded that attempts to disrupt these vital flows have repeatedly failed and that any new strategy, given global energy needs and Iran’s meticulous management, is destined to meet the same fate. Qasemi characterized the public statements and actions of some U.S. officials as indicative of a volatile mindset, suggesting that the composition of Iran’s adversaries with such “immature” individuals is a divine blessing.
