
UN Peacekeeper Succumbs to Wounds in Southern Lebanon Incident
Beirut, Lebanon – The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has announced the tragic death of a 31-year-old Indonesian peacekeeper, Private Riko Budianto, who passed away from injuries sustained in an incident involving projectile fire in southern Lebanon.
Tragic Incident in Adsheet
According to a UNIFIL statement, the incident occurred in March when a projectile struck the peacekeepers’ base in the town of Adsheet. Private Budianto was subsequently transferred to a Beirut hospital for treatment, where he ultimately succumbed to his severe injuries.
UNIFIL Expresses Deep Condolences and Calls for Restraint
UNIFIL has expressed profound regret over the incident and extended its deepest condolences to Private Budianto’s family, the Indonesian Army, and the government and people of Indonesia.
In its statement, the international body urged all parties to adhere to their commitments under international law and to ensure the security of UN personnel and assets under all circumstances. UNIFIL emphasized that targeted attacks against peacekeepers constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and in certain instances, could be considered a war crime.
